My niece, Marie, is also my boys’ godmother. She gave me the most wonderful idea: The Good Things Jar. Each day, or week or whenever the mood strikes, you write down on a slip of paper something good, something that makes you happy or that you’re grateful for. You put the note in the Good Things Jar. It can be anything: good hair day, good party, good friend, etc.
Then, on either New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, you pull all the papers out of the jar and read about all the good things in your life. I think it’s really about being grateful and remembering the small things that make your life happy and complete.
This is a glass jar I keep on my kitchen counter. I try to add to it whenever I can. It helps me appreciate things. The best thing is that my boys add to the Good Things Jar, too. Recently, I went to put a note in it, and I happened look down and see a paper that Jax had added. It said, “Good Mom,” and I cannot tell you how happy that made me. I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day.
