“You must lead by example. If you want people to treat you correctly, you must be the first one to love trust and respect.”
I found this sentiment via Twitter from thegodlight.org. I immediately re-tweeted it. It certainly is a variation of the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is an important value that I consistently convey to my sons.
But I want to take this thought one step further. If you want respect, you’ve got to start with yourself. What I mean by this is that you have to treat yourself as you would want other people to treat you. You can be the kindest person in the world. But even if you are someone who is always doing nice things for others, the best way to show people how you want (and frankly, expect) to be treated is by being good to yourself. Sometimes, we’re the last ones that we think about. But we need to take time for ourselves to rest, relax and rejuvenate. We need to nourish our bodies and minds.
In order to be a great mom to my boys, I have to be good to myself. I have to lead by example. I want them to grow up knowing that their mom is strong and giving and nurturing. And a big part of that is making sure I am in a good place. That doesn’t mean that I can never have a negative emotion or reaction to something. But my overall behavior and outlook will affect theirs. This simply means that I have to make sure I do things every day keep my state of mind strong and good.
